Discover Essen

Ruhr metropolis, Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 – Essen is all of this. And in 2017, Essen will be presenting itself as European Green Capital!

Essen is the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, while in Germany Essen occupies third place in the green rankings, after Hanover and Magdeburg.

And the population of around 590,000 appreciates this. The short distances from the front door to green spaces, almost 300 kilometres of cycle paths throughout the entire municipal area, the many streams that have been restored to nature, and communal gardening with neighbours and friends: All of this makes Essen a city worth living in!

On a tour of discovery through Essen

Whether on foot, by bike, or in the open-topped double-decker bus – there are many ways to discover the Green Capital Essen.

The Tourism Centre of Essen Marketing Gesellschaft (EMG) is your centralised contact locally. Tours, accommodation options, city and trade fair information can be found here.

Mobile on two wheels

The well developed cycle paths and cycle roads throughout the municipal area are not just for sporting leisure activities, but are also popular for commuting to work. With the extensive metropolradruhr bicycle rental system, visitors to the city can also spontaneously explore the city on two wheels.

On 15 themed tours and routes in Essen, parks, churches and former collieries, as well as charming beer gardens, present interesting and refreshing stops. Particularly popular are the routes along the former tracks of the colliery railways. Corresponding maps are available from the Tourism Centre.

The app “ESSEN.Erfahren” offers navigation, maps and details of the cycle routes, tourist attractions, parks, and rest points.
